Rev. James W. McKean, Captain of Co. C 44th Iowa Inf. Vols (Civil War). At the time of his enlistment, Captain McLean was president of Lenox College, Hopkinton, Iowa. All his students enlisted but four and the college closed. Capt. McKean died in the service of disease at Memphis, Tennessee, July 9, 1864. Rev. Frank McKean, nephew of Capt. McKean was for a long time the pastor of the Central Presbyterian Church in Des Moines and now lives in Los Angeles (1947). This sword was carried in the Civil War by Rev. McKean.
