Owner of flour mills at Clermont, Iowa, 1850; manufacturer of brick and tile and later interested in farming and banking. State Senator, 12-20, General Assembly, 1868-1886. Governor of Iowa, 1886-1890. Member of Iowa State Board of Control, 1898-1900. Chairman Executive committee of Iowa Commission at Louisiana Purchase Exposition at St. Louis, 1904. Died in Clermont, Iowa, November 16, 1912.
