Charles Mason by George H. Yewell. 1804-1882. Teacher, lawyer, editor. Born in Pompey, Onandaga County, New York, October 24, 1804. Graduated from United States Military Academy, 1829, first in his class, spent two years in academy as instructor, then entered upon the study of law. Practiced law at Newburgh, New York, 1832, then to New York City in 1834. Removed to Burlington, Iowa, 1837. Chief Justice, Supreme Court of Iowa Territory, 1838-1847. Commissioner to revise Iowa laws, 1848. Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D.C., 1853-1857. Member of first State Board of Education, 1858. Died near Burlington, Iowa, February 25, 1882. His ashes rest with those of his wife in Aspen Grove, Burlington.
