Samuel Hawkins Marshall Byers by C.A. Cumming, 1906. 1838-1933. Soldier, Dipolmat, Poet. Born in Pulaski, Pennsylvania, July 23, 1838. Removed to Oskaloosa, Iowa, 1852. Admitted to practice law, 1861. Corporal Co. B, 5th Iowa Infantry, promoted of Adjuctant, Civil War. While prisoner at Columbia, South Carolina, wrote "Sherman's March to the Sea". Consul at Zurich and Consul-General to Italy and Switzerland, returning to United States in 1903 after 20 years of service. Author of "The Song of Iowa", made state song by legislative resulution, 1911. Author of "Iowa in War Times". Removed from Des Moines to California about 1926. Died in Los Angeles, California, May 24, 1933.
