Political button, .875" dia, image of William B. Allison "Our Choice for Senator." William Boyd Allison was US representative (1863-1871) and senator (1873-1908). In 1962, Allison was elected into the U.S House of Representatives as the Republican candidate for the 3rd Congressional District of Iowa. In 1870, Allison ran against Iowa Supreme Court Justice George G. Wright for Iowa Senator and lost. In 1971, Allison campaigning to take the Senate seat of James Harlan. He won the election against Harlan and took over his Senate seat in 1973. Allison was re-elected for U.S. Senator five times (in 1878, 1884, 1890, 1896, and 1902). During his time as a Senator, in 1896, he was a Republican candidate for President. However, in the end William McKinley was selected as the Republican candidate. In 1908, Allison was selected again to run as the Republican candidate for Senator. However, he died before the general election began and Albert B. Cummins was selected to fill his Senate seat.
