Description Chief Wappello by Charles A. Cumming. 1787-1842. Born at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, 1787. Chief of Sac and Fox tribes his name meaning Prince of Chief. Removed to Muscatine Slough on the west side of the Mississippi River, 1829; then to a vicinity near Ottumwa, Iowa. Went ot New York, Boston, and Washington D.C. with Keokuk, 1837. Begged to be buried near his friend, General Joseph M. Street, and his wishes were carried out. Died near Ottumwa, Iowa, March 15, 1842.
