Born in Granby, Conn., October 5, 1835. Removed to Ottumwa, Iowa, 1856. Stumped for Stephen A. Douglas, 1860. County Attorney, 1861. Representative, 10th Iowa General Assembly, 1863, and Senator, 11th General Assembly, 1865. Reporter for Iowa Supreme Court, 1867-1875. Published with Thomas F. Withrow. four volumes, "Digest of Decisions of Supreme Court of Iowa," 1874-1979. Republican candidate for Congress, 1883. Attorney for C.B. & Q. Ry. and C.R.I. & P. Ry. for some twenty years. Removed to Kansas City, Mo., 1886 and to Pasadena, California, 1911. Author of "Recollections and Sketches of Notable Lawyers and Public Men of Early Iowa", 1916. Died in Pasadena, California, May 9, 1921.
