Ansel Briggs by J.N. Parks. 1806-1891. Stagecoach operator, legislator, governor. Born in Vermont, February 3, 1806. Removed to Ohio and operated lines in early 1830's. Became widely known as a poineer in transportation. Carried mail weekly between Dubuque and Davenport and Iowa City. Elected to Terretorial House of Representatives, 1842. First governor of Iowa, 1846-1850. Elected sheriff of Jackson County. One of the founders of Florence, Nebraska. Died and buried in Omaha, May 5, 1881 and in 1909 his remains were removed to Andrew, Iowa.
