Fred Julius Schmidt, Garnavillo, Clayton County (1895-1958). Following the war he became an industrial arts educator, at the time of his death he was head of the industrial arts department at Ball State Teachers College (Ball State University) in Muncie, Indiana.
His father was a carpenter in Garnavillo, he worked as a farm hand at the time of his World War I selective service registration on June 5, 1917. Schmidt's father was born in Germany and his mother was born in Ohio though her parents were German-born.
