Miller was a soldier, lawyer, author, judge. Born near Mount Pleasant, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania, October 18, 1823. Early vocation that of molder in father's iron factory and reporter on newspapers in Iowa City, Iowa. Admitted to Bar, 1853. Colonel of 28th Iowa Infantry Vols., Civil War, 1862-1863. Judge of 8th Judicial District, 1858-1862, 1868. Appointed to fill vacancy on Iowa Supreme Bench, September 14, 1870. Elected to Iowa Supreme Court, 1870-1875, serving as Chief Justice for two years. Member of faculty of State University of Iowa, 1871-1875. Settled permanently in Des Moines, 1873. Author of legal works, one of which was unfinished at the time of his death. Died in Des Moines, Iowa, November 7, 1896.
