Description Chief Keokuk (The Watchful Fox) by Eliza J. Eversole Campbell (Mrs. J.W.). Ca. 1780-1848. Indian Chief, orator. Born on Rock River, Illinios, ca. 1780. In 1832, his efforts kept the tribe from uniting with Black Hawk in taking arms against the United States. Representative of Sac Indians in treaty at close of Black Hawk War, 1832, when he became chief of the Sac and Fox Nation. Visited Washington, D.C. with General Street, 1837. Presented with medal by City of Boston, 1837. Removed to Kansas, 1845. Settled on Iowa River. Orator of much ability to the Sac and Foxes. Died in Kansas, June 1848.
