Description Section of broad wall from Confederate prison at Columbia, South Carolina, with escape hole cut by Col. Samuel Hawkins Marshall Byers. Columbia, South Carolina prison - a piece from the wooden wall through which S.H.M. Byers, 5th Iowa cut a hole and passed through it to Liberty February 15, 1865. After the war officials permitted Major B. to remove the piece. Appraised by B.W. Hoadley at $4.00 (After 1926). Civil War
