Political button, John H. Gear for Senate, sepia image of Gear. He was elected as mayor of Burlington, Iowa in 1863. From 1871 to 1877, Gear served in the Iowa House of Representatives. He served as speaker for two of these seven years. From 1878 to 1882 Gear was the Governor of Iowa. In 1887, Gear was elected as a Republican congressman for the 1st congressional district of Iowa. He served as a congressman in the House of Representatives until he was defeated in the 1890 election. However, he was selected as the Assistant Secretary of the Treasury by Benjamin Harrison. He was the Assistant Secretary of Treasury until 1892 when he was elected into the House of Representatives. In 1894, Gear was elected by the Iowa General Assembly to serve as a senator for the state of Iowa. Gear was re-elected in 1900, however, he died in July 1900 before the beginning of his second term.
