Member of the House of 1st and 6th Territorial Legislative Assemblies. Representative 4th General Assembly, 1852-1854. Member of the State Convention founding the G.O.P., 1856. One of the three leaders of Iowa Republicanism. Editor "Iowa Farmer and Horticulturist". First Whig governor of Iowa, 1854-1858. United States Senator, 1859-1869. Voted against impeachment of Andrew Johnson, 1869. Died at Burlington, Iowa, February 7, 1872.
