Description Hoyt Sherman by G.D. Peixotto. 1827-1904. Oil on canvas painted one year before his death in 1904. Painted by George Da Maduro Peixotto (b. 1859). Presented to the Iowa Department of History and Archives (State Historical Society of Iowa) in 1903. 65.5" x 51.5" overall. Painitng is sound and in good condition. Re-Secured and re-backed in original frame in 1991. The frame is gilt on wood and has minor surface loss of gilt on the lower corners (left and right and on the upper edge. Lawyer, banker, public official. Born in Lancaster, Ohio, November 1, 1827. Printer in Mansfield, Ohio. Removed to Des Moines, Iowa, 1848, where he practiced law and engaged in banking. Appionted by President Piece as Postmaster at Des Moines, 1849-1853. Paymaster with rank of Major in Civil War. Established banking firm Hoyt Sherman & Company, 1854. One of first directors of State Bank of Iowa and Cashier of the Des Moines branch until 1861. Author of several papers on banking. One of the incorporators of Equitable Life Insurance Company, becoming its manager in 1868. Died in Des Moines, Iowa, January 25, 1904.
