Delegate to first Republican State Convention, Iowa City, 1856. Representative, 7, 8, 8Ex, Iowa General Assembly, 1858-1862. State Senator, 9, 9Ex, 10, 1862-1866. Postmaster, Fort Dodge, Iowa, 1864. Editor and publisher of the Fort Dodge Iowa Northwest, 1864. Editor and owner of the Fort Dodge Republican, 1864, afterwards changed the Northwestern. Lieutenant Governor of Iowa, 1866-1868. Removed to Des Moines and became editor of the Iowa Homestead, 1872. United States Pension Agent for Iowa and Nebraska, 1872-1880. One of the authors of a bill to found a state agricultural college when member of the house of representatives. As chair of the Board of Trustees he supported the college being a co-educational college.
Author of a 4-volume "History of Iowa" on which he worked for more than seventeen years. Died in Des Moines, Iowa, June 1, 1904.
