Prosecuting Attorney, Van Buren County, 1847. State Senator, 2, 3, General Assembly, 1848-1851. Judge, Iowa Supreme Court, 1855-1870. President, State Agricultural Society, 1860-1864. Established Iowa Law School, Des Moines with Judge C.C. Cole, 1865, which merged with the Iowa State University Law Department. United States Senator, 1871-1877. Director, Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railroad Company, 1879, a position he held the remainder of his life. President, Polk County Savings Bank and Security Loan and Trust Company. Lecturer in Law Department of the State University for many years. Died in Des Moines, Iowa, January 11, 1896.
