2nd Iowa Volunteer Infantry, Co. D. National. Company flag. 1 layer. 8 stars visible (original star number is unknown). 1 ply.
Company D of the 2nd Iowa Infantry recieved most of its recruits from Des Moines and the surrounding area. The flag may have originally had 33 stars on the canton, but only eight are visible due to souveniring. The flag was made by the ladies of Des Moines for the 2nd Iowa Volunteers. It was presented to them in April of 1861. The flag was carried by the company during the Civil War. The flag was used as the battle flag for the Battle of Shiloh, Tenn., April 6-7, 1862. Originally there was the practice of removing a star and piece of the field in the casket, however, as the number of deaths mounted due to the intense fighting this practice was abandoned.
