Van Buren County Attorney, 1898-1902. Practiced law Keosauqua, Iowa, 1896-1907. Asstant and Acting Curator, Historical Department, 1907; Curator, 1908-1937. Secretary of Iowa State Board of Conservation, 1914-1925. Founder of Mississippi Valley Historical Association, Iowa State Conservation Commission, and National Convention on Parks. Active in the origins and the furtherance of plans for the Capitol Extension Program. Member of the historical associations and recipient of honorary degrees. Will be remembered for his support of conservation, his studies of Indian records, and his promotion of historical review. Died in Des Moines, Iowa, July 13, 1941.
