Description Joseph Smith by Victor Kress after Charles Major. 1805-1844. Born at Sharon, Vermont, December 23, 1805. Founder of Mormonism. Founded city and temple of Zion at Independence, Missouri. Removed to Nauvoo, Illinois. The first conference of the Mormon Church was held in 1830 when Smith is said to have performed a miracle. Tarred and feathered by citizens of Kurtland, Missouri, 1830. Settlement in Nauvoo, Illinios was founded in 1840. Chief Keokuk visited Smith at Nauvoo. Murdered in Carthage, Illinois jail, June 27, 1844.
