Description John H. Charles by Unknown Artist. 1826-1904. Born in Lancaster County, Penna, January 19, 1826. Merchandizing, Steamboating, Carpentry. Removed in infancy to Mifflin Township, Ahsland County, Ohio, where they settled on a farm and where he grew to manhood. In 1850 he left for California. After a stay of 6 months, returned to the east. Finally settled in Souix City in December 1856. Merchandizing and steamboating on upper Missouri until 1900. Pioneer in founding and developing of Scientific Association, public library of Souix City and various schools. Organized the movement to erect the famous monument on bluff overlooking the river and city in memory of Sergeant Charles Floyd of the Lewis and Clark Expedition who died there August 20, 1804.
