George Collier Remey by Harold L. MacDonald. 1841-1928. Naval instructor and commander. Born in Burlington, Iowa, August 10, 1841. Graduate of US Naval Academy, 1859. Served on South Atlantic Squadron. Naval Commander in Civil War. Instructor, Commander, 1864-1897. Commodore, 1897. Commander in Chief, US Navy in the Far East. First Rear Admiral born west of the Mississippi River. Served his country in four wars. Participated in quelling the Boxer Uprising in China. Captured by Confederates and was in Columbia, South Carolina, jail later transferred to Libby Prison. On staff of Admiral Gherardi, 1880-1882 and witnessed bombardment of Alexandria, Egypt. Died in Washington, D.C., February 10, 1928.
