Object Name Cane
Description This cane was carved from California manzanite wood by Amos S. Longley while returning from the gold fields via Cape Horn in 1857. A native of Maine, Mr. Longley subsequently came to Grinnell and settled in Chester Township, moving to town shortly before his death in 1865. He left a widow Cordelia Bigelow Longley and two small children - Lyman A. Longley (1861-1909) father of Ralph L and Ethel C. Longley - and Martha Longley Marvin (1863-1937) wife of F.P. Marvin, a long-time business man of Grinnell
