Description Ship's bell which came from a cargo ship originally called "IOWA" Built for Hamburh American Line in 1902. The bell is marked "IOWA" which was presented to Vice-President Henry A. Wallace by US Maritim Commission. History of cargo vessel from which bell was taken: Built by Hamburg American Line (German ) 1902 at Belfast, Ireland; sold to Royal Mail Lines Ltd, London, England; delivered from Patuxent River Fleet, March 26, 1942. SS Empire Bitter - ex-ARTEMIS - exBOHEMIA - exIOWA. Seized by US April 6, 1917 and turned over to Shipping Board, June 30, 1917; turned over to War Dept July 5, 1917; it was laid up at various times at New York, Baltimore, Norfolk, and Patuxent River Fleet when it ws sold to Royal Mail Line, Ltd, London, March 26, 1941
