Robert Lucas by Mary F. Murray. 1781-1853. Soldier, Legislator, Governor. Born at Shepherdstown, Virginia, April 1, 1781. Colonel in War of 1812. Member of Ohio Legislature for nineteen years. Presided over Democratic National Convention which nominated Andrew Johnson for second term for president, May 1832. Governor for Ohio, 1832-1836. Governor of Iowa Territory, 1838-1841. Member of Iowa's First Constitutional Convention, 1844. Key figure in two boundary line disputes: 1st as governor of Ohio, oppsed Michigan's claims; 2nd as governor of Iowa involved in Iowa-Missouri boundary dispute. Died in Iowa City, Iowa, February 7, 1853.
