Battleship Iowa laid keel in the New York Naval Shipyard on June 27, 1940, two months later the battleship was launched with Mary A Wallace, wife of Vice President Wallace, sponsered the ship. During 1944, USS Iowa sailed the Panama Canal and had the first Pacific campaign, the campaign supported carrier air strikes against Kwajalein and Eniwetok Atolls. The Battleship Iowa sank cruiser Katori on March 28, 1944. January 15,1945, the USS Iowa was dry-docked in order to repair the ship after it sustained shaft damage during a typhoon. The ship began inactive duty on September 1948, but was later recommissioned in August of 1951 due to hostilites with Korea.
