James Grant by Karl Schmalhaus. 1812-1891. Lawyer, legislator, jurist, author. Born near Enfield, Halifax County, North Carolina, December 12, 1812. Removed to Scott County, Iowa, 1838. Member 1st Territorial Legislature, 1841. Member 1st and 2nd Constitutional Conventions, 1844 and 1846 and of the 4th Legislative Assembly. Judge of District Court. Representative and Speaker of the House, 4th Iowa General Assembly. Member of the committee to organize Law Department at Iowa State University. Prominent in land and railroad cases. Died in Oakland, California, March 14, 1891.
