Hiram Price by George H. Yewell. 1814-1901. Statesman, Public Official. Born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, January 10, 1814. Removed to Davenport, Iowa Territory, 1844, soon after settling in Scott County. Recorder and Treasurer of Scott County. One of three men selected to draft a bill afterwards enacted into first Iowa Prohibitory Liquor Law, introduced in the Legislature, 1854. President, State Bank of Iowa, 1860-1865. At outbreak of Civil War he advanced $22,000 to aid Governor S.J. Kirkwood in raising, arming, and equipping the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Regiments of Iowa Infantry. United States Congressman, 1863-1869, 1877-1881. Commissioner of Indian Affairs, 1881-1885. Removed to Washington, D.C. about 1886. Died in Washington, D.C., May 30, 1901.
