Employed in office of his father, Richard Hatton, newspaper publisher in Cadiz, Ohio. Drummer boy in 15th Ohio Infantry and private 98th Ohio Regiment, promoted to Lieutenant, Civil War. At close of Civil War removed to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, from Ohio. Owner of The Journal, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, for several years. Removed to Burlington, Iowa, where he became postmaster and editor of Burlington Hawkeye. Postmaster-general, 1884-1885. Editor-in-Chief of Washington Post. Died in Washington, D.C., April 30, 1894.
