Object Name Loom
Description Hand. This loom was made at least 80 years ago by William Hootman of Mt. Zion, Iowa, Van Buren County. He was born December 25, 1818. His wife, Margaret Nelson Hootman was born March 30, 1822. She wove cotton and woolen material on this loom to be made into clothing for her and her husband and a family of ten children. She also wove woolen blankets, coverlets, table linen, etc. A son, Hugh Hootman, born in 1853. When a small lad smoothed the loom with a pieces of glass. Near the time of World War I, the oldest daughter Mary E,. Hootman, a retired school teacher, spun flax into 25 yards of linen toweling. During the past several years this loom was used by Vermil Hootman, youngest son of the family and his wife, Caroline Patrick Hootman and Hazel Hootman Bonnett of Keosauqua, Iowa, Van Buren County, youngest grandchildren of William and Margaret Hootman in the year 1940
