Purchased the Jefferson Dee, 1871, Fort Dodge Messenger, 1874; Oskaloosa Herald, 1881, and with Mrs. Swalm owned and edited it until 1897. Postmaster, Oskaloosa, 1882-1892. Appointed US Consul to Montevideo, Uruguay, 1897-1903; Southampton, England, 1903-1921; Bermuda, 1921-August 1922. Died at Hamilton Beach, Bermuda, August 24, 1922. 35.5" x 30"
