Description 1144 a: 38 shell casing found on the Little Big Horn Battlefield, June 25, 1926. Majority of cases are the 1873 design: straight rimmed case slightly inclined toward front, .458 inch diameter at neck, .608 inch diameter of rim, 2.105 inch long, 2.55 inch with bullet. Typical of the shells used by the 7th US Cavalry's Model 1873 Springfield Carbines. Casings are partially crushed and show various amounts of patina and soil coverage. Silicone glue remains attached from previous exhibit use in the 1970's. See the Accession file for a listing of the casings (Jan 2009)
