Political button, "For U.S. Senator, A. B. Cummins," black and white image on white button, Albert B. Cummins, US senator (1908-1926). Albert Baird Cummins was a Progressive Republican. He first ran for U.S. Senator in 1894 and in 1900 against John H. Gear. However, each year Cummins lost. In 1901, Cummins ran for Governor of Iowa and was elected for three consecutive terms. In the election for the third term, he defeated Democratic candidate Claude R. Porter. Later, Cummins ran for U.S. Senator in 1908 defeating Democratic rival Claude R. Porter. He served as Iowa Senator for 18 years until 1926 (re-elected in 1909, 1914, and 1920). During his time as Senator, Cummins ran for president under the Republican ballot in 1912 and 1916. However, he was not selected as the Republican candidate during the Republican National Convention either time. In 1926, Sam W. Brookhart was selected as the Republican candidate in the primary for senator instead of Cummins.
