Description Portrait of Booker Taliaferro Washington by Henry O. Tanner. 1856-1915. Orator, author, lecturer, educator. Born in Virginia a slave of unknown parentage about 1858. Graduate and instructor of Hampton, Virginia Normal and Agricultural Institute, 1872-1875. Appointed instructor at Hampton Institute, 1879. Organizer and principle of Tuskegee Institute, Alabama, 1881-1915. Organized National Negro Business League at Boston, 1900. Received honorary MA degree from Harvard University, 1901. Guest of City of Des Moines, March 12, 1911, when he spoke to 100s of his race at a union meeting of negro congregations of the city. After Civil War he moved to Malden, West Virginia, where he taught school for two years. Received by King of Denmark. Died at Tuskegee, Alabama, November 14, 1915. 30" x 36"
