Enlisted in 15th Iowa Infantry where he was wounded and taken prisoner at Shiloh, 1862. Paroled and promoted major, 1863; lieutenant-colonel, 1863. Wounded at Atlanta, Georgia, 1864. Promoted colonel, 1864; Brigadier-general U.S. Vols., 1865, Brevet Brigadier-general U.S.A. 1866. Editor, Ottumwa Courier, 1866-1869. Postmaster, Ottumwa, Iowa, 1866-1870. Supervisor U.S. Internal Revenue, 1870-1876. Built Ottumwa Street Ry., 1878 and was president of company. Died in Ottumwa, Iowa, October 3, 1886 (?)
