Description Etching, fungus, M.J. Hall 1890. The above novelty artwork first developed by Martha J. Williams Hall while living on a farm in Dallas County, Iowa, where she was reared and lived many years. She had no art training or assistance. She used no tool except the knife here shown and a needle, and in her long life she made several hundred of these which she gave to friends. She was born in Iowa, Jan 1, 1852, married to George Hall of Osceola, Illinois, and died in Los Angeles Jan 11, 1944, age 92 years. The certificate was received from the Columbian Exposition, Chicago 1893 where she exhibited specimens including the small unfinished piece to show how they were made. She gave these samples to her brother Ora Williams with request that they be kept in the Museum of the State Historical Department
