Description William Salter by Louis Mayer. 1821-1910. Author, missionary. Born in Brooklyn, New York, November 17, 1821. Removed to Iowa Territory, 1843, as a member of the "Iowa Band" of Congregational clergyman. Ordained at Denmark, Iowa, November 5, 1843. Pastor of First Congregational Chuch, Burlington, Iowa, 1845-1910. Preached first sermon at Keosauqua, Iowa, 1843. Received degree of D.D. form Iowa State University, 1864. Author of "Life of James W. Grimes" and other books. Died in Burlington, Iowa, August 15, 1910.
