James Clarke by Julia A. Darling. 1812-1850. Agricultural Journalist, Public Official, Terr. Governor. Born in Westmore County, Pennsylvania, July 5, 1812. Went ot St. Louis, worked on Missouri Republican, 1836; to Belmont, Wisconsin Territory and established Belmont Gazette in same year. Moved to Burlington, Iowa, and established the Wisconsin Territorial Gazette and Burlington Advertiser 1837, the first newspaper published there. Librarian, Territory of Wisconsin, 1838. Secretary of Territory of Iowa, 1839-1841. Governor of Territory of Iowa, 1845-1846. Mayor of Burlington, 1844. Resumed management of Burlington Gazette, 1848. Delegate to Democratic National Convention, 1848, which nominated Lewis Cass for President. Legislature bestowed his name upon new county of "Clarke" when it was organized, 1846. Died in Burlington, Iowa, July 28, 1850.
