First State Superintendent of Public Instruction, 1847. Practicing lawyer, 1848-1853. President and professor, Iowa Wesleyan College, 1853-1855. United States Senator, 1855-1865; 1867-1873. Secretary of Interior, 1865-1866. Presiding Judge in Alabama Claims Commission, 1882-1885. Bronze statue of James Harlan placed in Statuary Hall of National Capitol, Washington, D.C., 1910. Died in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, October 5, 1899.
In 2014, a statue of Norman Borlaug replaced the Harlan statue in Statuary Hall. The State of Iowa installed the Harllan statue on the campus of Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Henry County.
