A flag of the 4th Iowa Cavalry, Co. K that is patterned after a U. S. National flag. 1 layer. Cloth (cotton). Hand sewn. Company flag. 34 stars and 13 stripes.
The division traveled to Atlanta where they were mustered out of service on August 10 and returned to Davenport on August 24. Of this division many recieved the Medal of Honor-Nicholas Fanning, James P. Miller, Charles Swam, Norman F. Bates, Edward J. Bebb, Henry County, Richard H. Cosgriff, John Hays, and Richard H. Morgan.This flag was made by the ladied of Mount Pleasant, Iowa for Private James B. Gregg of Henry Country. Gregg remained a Private through his entire term of enlistment, apparently never suffered wounds in battle and did not re-enlist. The flag was donated to the State Historical Department by Florence Gregg Foster of Des Moines in 1923.
