Description A. FLAG:
Patterned after a South Carolina state flag. Captured by the 31st Iowa Infantry Volunteer Regiment on 02/17/1865 in Columbus, SC. 1 layer. Hand and machine sewn. Wool and cotton. Oversized.

HISTORY:
Old catalogue card reads: "Palmetto flag captured by the 31st Iowa Inf. Vol. at Columbia, C.S. Feb. 17, 1865. The 31st Iowa led the advance the morning of the 17th of Feb. when Columbia was captured and its flag was planted on the State House. White crescent and palmetto tree on blue ground. Note: The headquarters flag was placed in the possession of Major S.S. Farwell by Oliver Welch, a private of Company H and remained in his possession until it was donated to the State Historical Society of Iowa in Des Moines by Farwell's daughter, Mary F. Carpenter.
