Description George Greene by Adeline A. Wigand. 1817-1880. Lawyer, judge, financier, promoter. Born in Stratfordshire, England, April 15, 1817. Removed to America 1829; came west, stopping at Davenport, 1838; settled in Marion, Linn County, 1840; removed to Dubuque in 1845, where he figured prominently in upbuilding of Cedar Rapids as any other man of his time.
First entered upon study of medicine but soon abandoned it for law. Member of 3rd and 4th Legislative Assemblies, 1840 and 1841 respectively. Editor of The Miners' Express (Dubuque) newspaper. Judge of Iowa Supreme Court, 1847-1855. Organized the Cedar Rapids Water Company, it would be purchased by the city A founder of Coe College. Died in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, June 23, 1880.
